"Canada has one of the highest life expectancies in the world as people are living beyond 15-21 years after turning the age of 65. Regular physical activity is important for everyone, but it is especially important for older adults as they age. Exercise decreases your risk for cardiovascular disease and it is crucial for minimizing chronic illness as well as increasing your quality of life. Exercise is also key to maintaining independence and falls prevention."

THE MODERN WORKPLACE

More and more companies today are recognizing that a healthy workforce is a productive workforce. With the pressure and time constraints of today’s economy, businesses are required to do more with less time and resources. This creates a continuous stress on today’s workers and forces employees to be in postures for too long. This is especially true with the heightened reliance on technology in today’s workforce. Recent research has shown that poor health and stress factors negatively affect productivity. Competitive businesses environments need to use a proactive health approach to increase workforce productivity to reduce these negative productivity factors.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The “Corporate Wellness Plan” offers the integrated services of Pure (Powered by On Edge Fitness) and Body Balance Health and Physiotherapy. This program is designed to provide employers and companies with the unique opportunity in the Sarnia area to promote health and wellness within their employees to increase the productivity of the work environment.

As stated in an excerpt from the Harvard Business Review (2014)

Workplaces have a unique power to reframe the mindset around health itself – from one of sickness to wellness. “Companies are a microcosm of society and an important and unleveraged setting for health improvement and risk reduction,” says Dr. Ron Goetzel, a leading expert in the field of health and productivity management1.
This review focused on three main strategies to promote health that ultimately improved the participation rate of the employees and resulted in a more proactive stance towards health. These areas included building the program into the work environment, building personal motivations, and making the program a collective effort. The “Corporate Wellness Plan” incorporates these same three approaches to ultimately help you integrate the core components of health and wellness promotion into your corporation.

A. BUILDING THE PROGRAM INTO THE WORK ENVIRONMENT
In this component of the program, a Registered Physiotherapist will devote a one-hour session to discuss the benefits of daily stretching to reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries and injuries associated with sustained postures and positioning. This session will be designed specifically to address the needs and risks that are specific to your workplace, determined through an intake questionnaire provided to the employer. For each of your registered employees, an individualized work-place ergonomic assessment will be conducted as requested. These assessments will be individualized to each employee and are tailored to promote a safe, healthy, and productive workplace environment. At your corporation’s request, on site visits with a Registered Massage Therapist (24 hours notice required) will also be available (submittable to most extended health coverage plans for reimbursement in partial or in full).

B. BUILDING PERSONAL MOTIVATIONS
In this component of the program, a Registered Physiotherapist will conduct individualized assessments to help determine the best approach to meet the personal goals of each employee. This assessment will take place at Body Balance Health and Physiotherapy and will involve collaboration with a certified personal trainer to develop an individualized exercise program that will address the client’s individual muscle imbalances and exercise needs. Each employee will receive two personal training sessions conducted within PURE by on Edge Fitness’s welcoming gym atmosphere. These sessions will be conducted with the involvement of a Registered Physiotherapist to ensure a successful transition into an appropriate gym program. Through the completion of this program, your employees will have improved access to health care services at Body Balance Health and Physiotherapy –as an initial intake assessment has already been conducted. These additional services may be covered by your extended health plan for physiotherapy services, on an as needed basis.

C. MAKE IT A COLLECTIVE EFFORT! TEAM BUILDING AND WELLNESS
The wellness program will promote long-term goal achievement and health improvements through the ongoing participation in studio classes at PURE Powered by On Edge Fitness, which can be used as team building exercises. One-year memberships will be offered to each employee as motivation to continue with the promotion of achieving the desired health goals of each individual. The classes included with each PURE Powered by On Edge Fitness member ship are: yoga, pilates, TRX, and additional exercise classes.

“Our society depends on”, the influences of employers and businesses, to help move healthy practices forward, “and to reframe the conversation from a focus on sick care to a focus on well care”1.

Evidence has pointed to the success of these programs in the workplace and the improvements of employee’s overall wellness and productivity is the key to success.

SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE WEEKEND WARRIOR

Are you so busy during the workweek that you find yourself cramming your entire weeks worth of exercise into the short two days of the weekend? As a result, are you finding yourself repetitively playing catch-up trying to manage the aches and pains of the last weekends “Tough Mudder”? Are you looking for strategies to overcome these muscle aches while still continuing with your “Weekend Warrior” routine?

If you answered “Yes” to any of the questions above, the “Weekend Warrior” healthy aging program may be right for you!

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

A “Weekend Warrior” is defined as an adult who completes his or her 150 minutes of weekly recommended physical activity (or 75 minutes of vigorous activity) in one, or two back-to-back sessions. In a recent study the risk of death (from all causes) amongst weekend warriors was reduced by 30% in comparison to their inactive adult counterparts1. However these health benefits were found, regardless of whether people crammed their physical activity into the weekend or spaced it out throughout the week.

With the understanding that exercise is beneficial and that some busy schedules and lifestyles force us into this “Weekend Warrior” pattern of activity, we have developed a proactive approach to keeping the weekend warrior healthy. Common injuries for the weekend warrior include muscle strains, ligament injuries and generalized joint and low back pain. More specific injuries can also occur based on the sport the individual is participating in. The “Survival Guide for the Weekend Warrior” proactive therapeutic program focuses on the prevention of these common injuries through strengthening weak muscles, ensuring proper stretching techniques and educating the client regarding proper exercise habits and suggested focus areas. The program initiates with an initial full body physical therapy assessment and exercise screening will be conducted by a registered Physical Therapist. You will then be given a home exercise program to target your individualized muscle imbalances and exercise goals. Two subsequent follow up sessions with the supervising Physical Therapist will be made available to review, modify and progress your individualized exercise program as needed.

The research supports the “Weekend Warrior” and through the help of this program we would like to as well!
